In 2012, the McKinsey Global Institute conducted a study to find out how much time employees spend on social technologies during the day. He found that employees spend about 28 percent of their day reading and responding to emails. While email is a tool of communication and meaningful collaboration, it absorbs a lot of time that could be spent doing to get the job.

Some jobs require a very large amount or the almost exclusive use of e-mail. However, if you do not fall into this category of case, it may be time to re-evaluate how and when e-mail is used. In a world in which everyone expects an immediate response to the texts and e-mails, it's hard not compulsively check your e-mail. However, if you do not change your approach, you could cut a lot of time out of your day job and go faster desktop.
